Your feet have a significant influence on how you feel so it is important to take good care of them. A good foot massage can be both relaxing and therapeutic, especially after a long hike or stressful day at work. Proper shoe wear is also very important especially with athletic activities such as running, sports and even walking. In fact, our feet have to perform 2 opposing functions of shock absorption and providing a stable foundation for both support and propulsion of our gait. The foot is designed to accomplish this by functioning within a normal range of movements called pronation and supination. We can gather information about how well your foot accomplishes this function by evaluating wear patterns on your shoes. Abnormal wear means abnormal gait and poor function. We can get other clues about foot function from seemingly minor things like calluses which always indicate an area of increased weight bearing. Foot deformities such as bunions, claw toes or hammer toes develop gradually as a result of abnormal foot biomechanics. One of the best ways to restore and maintain normal foot function is with customized shoe “inserts” known as orthotics. They not only help improve foot function and all types of foot problems, but also help relieve pain in other joints such as the knee, hip and back. American Orthotic Laboratories states that orthotics can be as good for your feet as eyeglasses are for your eyes! The problem is we are not usually as aware of foot problems as we are visual disturbances. Here are some questions and answers about orthotics, who needs them, what conditions they help and what you can expect from them. (need link to landing page for final page).
